About

A Brief History of Callahan-DeBaun Funeral Home

The first Callahan Funeral Home was founded by Thomas F. Callahan in 1913 and located at Wabash Ave. and 13 ½ Street. Upon his death his wife Charlotte and their 5 sons continued to operate the family business through the Great Depression. Times were tough for a widowed mother and her 5 children but the people of  Terre Haute were good the them and they were able to keep the business going. It was decieded that they had out grown their current facility so the decision was made to relocate and build a new modern facility.

The Callahan Funeral Home now located at Wabash and 25th Street was built in 1957 by the 2nd generation of Callahans.  After the death of Joseph Callahan, the Callahan family asked the DeBaun family to assume and continue their family business.  The Callahan family wanted to insure Callahan Funeral Home would continue to be locally owned and operated.

Curt DeBaun III was given the opportunity to keep another Terre Haute family owned and operated funeral home just that, family owned, with the purchase of the Callahan Funeral Home at 25th and Wabash in November of 2001.  This became Callahan-DeBaun Funeral Home.

DeBaun Funeral Homes & Crematory and Callahan-DeBaun Funeral Home are owned and operated by the third and fourth generations of DeBaun family members. The DeBaun Funeral Homes originally was established in 1925 in Prairie Creek by Curt and Myrtle DeBaun.  Curtis DeBaun Jr. and his wife Betty DeBaun opened the Idaho Street location to serve families in Terre Haute in 1952.  Curt DeBaun III now operates the family business’ The Callahan-DeBaun Funeral Home (Wabash Ave. at 25th St.) and the DeBaun Funeral Home & Crematory (Springhill Drive) with his sons Curtis IV and Seth.
